Confusion over NPI voiced at panel discussion

Confusion over the National Provider Identifier, soon to be required under HIPAA, rose to a head at a panel discussion of the Centers for Medicaid & Medicaid Services this week in Washington. The discussion turned "chaotic" as payer organizations and providers lobbed questions that officials were unable to answer, and the panel said the pending release of CMS' data dissemination policy would provide the ultimate source for all NPI instruction and information.
