Even top Texas students struggle to craft analytical essays

Even though more Texas high school students are passing the state's language-arts exam with higher scores than ever, fewer than half of students in North Texas pass a section that requires them to write a short response to a reading selection. Some fear their overall marks on this portion of the exam signals a lack of critical thinking and communication skills, while others say the students simply have too little exposure to such exercises.
