Although the U.S. has thus far avoided recession, it is precariously poised to fall at any time. The situation puts the Federal Reserve and its chairman, Ben Bernanke, in a tough position as dismal economic data continue to mount. Even the resilience of the economy in the first half of this year may be more worrisome than previously thought.
