Mineral trade prolonging Congo conflict

Mineral firms in the West are prolonging an extended conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo by failing to confirm the provenance of certain traded minerals. Human-rights group Global Witness called on the UN to impose sanctions against U.K. firm AMC for buying tin ore through a subsidiary in Congo. Belgian firms also were accused of trading in Congolese coltan, tin ore and gold.
