Unpaid workers may put employers in legal hot water

While some workers might be working without pay -- either voluntarily or because an employer requests it -- companies should tread carefully with this practice because it might be illegal, says Ross Eisenbrey, vice president of the Economic Policy Institute. Working free for a nonprofit is fine, he says, but other businesses might be violating the law. Still, desperate job seekers say it's a way to make contacts and gain new skills.
