U.S. manufacturing hard hit by recession

The recession has shuttered many manufacturing plants in the U.S., with 2 million manufacturing jobs disappearing since 2007. Only 13.9% of the country's overall economic activity is devoted to manufacturing, which puts the U.S. behind every industrial nation except France. The Obama administration has taken some steps to slow manufacturing's decline, including reducing fees for loan-guarantee programs.
