Arizona asks federal judge to toss immigration lawsuit

Officials in Arizona asked a federal judge to throw out a lawsuit brought by the Justice Department that aims to block the state's new immigration law. The state says the law, which allows local police to question anyone they suspect is an illegal immigrant, is within its rights. "Arizona merely seeks to assist with the enforcement of existing federal immigration laws in a constitutional manner," said lawyers for the state in court-filed papers. "It is [the Obama administration] that is attempting to impose immigration policies and priorities that contravene and conflict with federal law and unambiguous congressional intent."
