Fast-casuals build strong community ties

Restaurants that fall into the fast-casual segment tend to develop cultures that focus on supporting community causes, unlike large QSR chains that tend to get behind national causes, Fast Casual reports. Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill founder Ralph Rubio and his wife, Dione, were early examples of the trend -- in 1999, the pair started Cabo Cafe, a nonprofit restaurant whose proceeds went to support a local school for homeless children in San Diego.
