Mass. district expands programs to prevent "summer slide"

Framingham Public Schools in Massachusetts offers traditional summer-school programs, but it recently began expanding its program to target the needs of specific student populations, such as low-income and bilingual students. The district also is seeking to engage students in hands-on learning experiences. Newer programs include an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math to help boost learning in those areas and another that incorporates bilingual instructors to help reduce loss of math and reading skills from one school year to another.
