Mississippi to hire reading coaches ahead of third-grade mandate

The Mississippi Department of Education is set to hire 24 reading coaches who will be placed in the lowest-performing schools throughout the state. The state had planned to hire 75 coaches, but officials said too few of the 500 applicants had the right mix of skills in literacy instruction and adult learning.
