Carbyne turns to a semiconductor

Researchers at Rice University have worked with carbyne, a chain of carbon atoms, stretching the material to make it function as an insulator, rather than a conductor. "What we realized here is that you can use tension to dynamically go from one regime to the other, which makes it useful on a completely different level," Rice researcher Vasilii Artyukhov said in a statement.
