Study: RN ranks are higher than expected, continue to grow

A Rand Corp. study published in Health Affairs said the registered nurse workforce in the U.S. reached 2.7 million in 2012, higher than the 2.2 million peak that was expected, and is continuing to increase. The study found part of the reason is that more nurses are delaying retirement but lead author David Auerbach said researchers also found that "RNs were especially attached to the mission of what they do."
