D.C. school board to require healthier fare in vending machines

The District of Columbia is set to join a growing list of jurisdictions requiring school vending machines to stock more nutritious items. A resolution approved unanimously by the D.C. Board of Education yesterday calls for vending machines to restrict beverage offerings to water, low-fat or fat-free milk, and drinks containing at least 50% fruit juice. Food items face limits in portion size as well as fat and sugar content.
