Utah faces severe teacher shortage

Utah's Board of Education and Board of Regents are pressing the Legislature for higher pay for educators and more money for recruitment and retention programs to curb teacher attrition, now running at 1,175 educators a year. The boards' annual report predicts that the current loss rate, combined with expected increases in student enrollment, will create 80,000 teacher vacancies over the next 20 years.
