Asian markets inch up, with BHP Billiton boosting Australia

Most Asian share markets gained Wednesday as better-than-expected corporate earnings in the U.S. boosted investor sentiment. Japan's Nikkei 225 climbed 0.5%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.4% and New Zealand's NZX 50 gained 0.8%. South Korea's Kospi Composite slid 0.1%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index inched up 0.1% and China's Shanghai Composite jumped 1.5%. Taiwan's Taiex added 0.8%, Singapore's Straits Times Index climbed 0.6% and Malaysia's main index advanced 1.1%.
