Illinois is forced to make big cuts to education budget

The Illinois State Board of Education approved a $7.26 billion budget for the upcoming school year after trimming $146 million. The cuts hit a number of education initiatives hard, including early-childhood education, programs for gifted children and performance incentives for teachers. Lawmakers warn of further cuts to come next year because of a halt in federal stimulus funding.
