Lawmakers want to toughen title insurance regulations

Title insurers are feeling the brunt of tougher regulations as government officials dispute fees linked to insuring ownership for home purchases and mortgage refinancing. Some states have enforced new laws to bring down rates, while state regulators are exploring ways to determine reasonable fees. The Barack Obama administration also wants to include title insurance to the list of products that will be regulated by the proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency.
