Bosses who find themselves drawn to visionary new ventures should take a moment to recall Pets.com, the online retailer that tried to sell dog food at a huge discount, suggests Wally Bock. "It was as if Pets.com was living out the old joke: 'I lose money on every sale, but I make it up in volume,'" Bock writes.
