Analysis: U.S. banks have little to celebrate

Second-quarter earnings reports confirm that banks have managed to avoid additional disaster, but that's little cause for celebration, according to The Economist. "Consumers continue to shed debt; companies carry ever more cash," the magazine says. "Banks' pre-provision revenue growth is muted, and there has been no recovery in loan growth of the sort seen after previous recessions."
