Are wildfires good for the environment?

The American West arguably needs more wildfires, researchers say, since limited burning is a natural process and can help ensure species diversity. Public awareness is part of the solution, particularly for nearby property owners. "It's hard to get the message across that this has been going on for thousands and thousands of years," says George Johnson of The Nature Conservancy.
