CMS looks at starting hospital star wars

CMS is looking at assigning stars or some other symbol to hospitals on the agency's Hospital Compare website to make comparison easier for consumers. The ratings would be based on quality metrics the agency already uses, but some experts questioned whether the data collected are robust, valid and measurable enough to make such a system effective. The Association of American Medical Colleges said a star-rating system would run the risk of exaggerating small differences in performance and making inappropriate distinctions between hospitals with similar performance records.
