Studies find variation in pediatric use of diagnostic tests in EDs

The use of radiography in children admitted to emergency departments for asthma substantially increased between 1995 and 2009, while rates were about the same for bronchiolitis or croup, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics. Another study published in Pediatrics looked at 100,615 ED visits of children aged 2 months to 18 years from 2007 to 2010 and found that hospitals that used more diagnostic tests for community-acquired pneumonia had higher hospitalization rates than low test-utilizing hospitals.
