Study: Many diabetes patients at hypoglycemic risk are overtreated

About 48% of older diabetes patients on insulin and/or sulfonylurea therapy who were at high risk of serious hypoglycemia appeared to be overtreated and had an HbA1C of less than 7%, with 25% at an A1C below 6.5% and 10% at an A1C lower than 6%. The study, based on more than 285,000 diabetes patients in the Department of Veterans Affairs health care system, was presented at the American Diabetes Association's 73rd Scientific Sessions.
