Operation Nomad Shadow, a U.S. military drone surveillance program, has operated Predator unmanned aerial vehicles above the Iraqi border with Turkey since 2011. The UAVs may be deployed in other international hotspots as well. "Surveillance drones could really help us out and really take the heat and wear and tear off of some of our manned aviation assets," said Marine Gen. John F. Kelly, chief of the U.S. Southern Command.
