WWF official offers insights into the pitfalls of sustainable palm oil

Sourcing sustainable palm oil continues to be a challenge because many large refiners purchase intermingled oil from multiple plantations, said Dave McLaughlin of the World Wildlife Fund. Segregating oil from plantations certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil is an expensive process that is especially cost-prohibitive to U.S. purchasers, he said. "My worry is that companies are using the absence of (affordable) segregated palm products as an excuse not to do anything," McLaughlin said, recommending companies purchase GreenPalm certificates.
