Ontario plastic surgeons use microsurgery for post-mastectomy reconstruction

Plastic surgeons Rob Shenker and Amy Chesney removed tissue from a mastectomy patient's abdomen and implanted it in her chest, then microsurgically connected the blood vessels from the new tissue to the chest tissue. The surgery took about six hours, and the patient was sent home from the hospital a day early. "It went way better than I was imagining," said Shenker, who also said that two similar reconstructions are already scheduled.
