Alaska Air beats estimates, turns in profitable quarter

Profit plunged nearly 54% at Alaska Air Group in the second quarter, but the parent company of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air still managed to far exceed Wall Street's expectations. With sales down 9%, Alaska reported a profit of $29.1 million. For the year to date, the company has earned $9.9 million on sales of $1.59 billion.
