States submit 278 applications for high-speed rail grants

Forty states have applied for federal funding for a high-speed rail system, according to the Department of Transportation. The DOT notes that the 278 rail-grant applications it has received total $102.5 billion. The DOT has $8 billion to distribute for high-speed rail grants, and funding could increase in 2010.
