AT&T grows contract customers in Q2, LTE network nears finish

AT&T grew its contracted subscriber base by 551,000 in the second quarter, mostly from tablet customers, a 72% improvement from a year ago and almost double its first-quarter results, the carrier reported Tuesday. Wireless revenues rose by 5.7% as AT&T sold a record 6.8 million smartphones, a majority of them Android handsets. Overall, sales increased by 1.6%, outpacing analyst estimates as compiled by Bloomberg, although profits shrank by 2.1% due to higher expenses. AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega predicted that the carrier would substantially complete its Long-Term Evolution network build by next summer, having passed 225 million potential subscribers.
