Green roofs could trump traditional roofs over structural, economic and environmental benefits, argues Kerry Blake. They protect waterproof membranes from ultraviolet radiation and extreme weather while promoting building energy-efficiency through better insulation. They also help reduce noise and fires, but they require a higher initial investment than conventional roofing, Blake notes.
