Critical care experts aim to reduce post-ICU symptoms

Study data show 35% of patients suffer post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, as well as delirium and hallucinations, after a stay in an ICU, and critical care specialists have identified the use of sedation and pain drugs as possible causes. The SCCM this year released new sedation guidelines urging physicians to treat pain first and then weigh the use of benzodiazepines. Vanderbilt University Medical Center runs post-ICU clinics where care teams evaluate patients for post-discharge problems.
