Experts: Fighting wildfires poses a growing challenge for government

Efforts to prevent and fight wildfires in the Western U.S. are becoming more challenging for the government because of climate change as well as development in the region's "wildland-urban interface," according to experts. Firefighting costs could exceed the U.S. Forest Service's existing budget if such development covers half of the area where private land adjoins federal forests in the region, said Ray Rasker of Headwaters Economics.
