Feds fine XTO Energy $100,000 over spill of fracking wastewater

XTO Energy, an Exxon Mobil unit, has been fined $100,000 for leaking chemically treated wastewater from a hydraulic fracturing site into a Susquehanna River tributary in 2010, according to the Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency. The company also must spend about $20 million on measures including an alarm system that will monitor its wastewater tanks and drilling operations and notify operators of any spills. The company also is prohibited from storing wastewater in open tanks.
