Zoonotic Heartland virus identified in lone star tick

The newly identified Heartland virus, which causes symptoms in humans similar to ehrlichiosis, was identified in 1 in 500 lone star ticks tested in Missouri, according to new research. Two Missouri farmers were hospitalized with serious illness from the virus in 2009, prompting researchers to test 56,428 ticks looking for the source of the virus.
