Symbian: R&D, not rivals, drove open-source move

A Symbian executive said this week that the company's lack of a strong research-and-development core sparked its decision to turn its mobile platform into an open source. Nokia is driving the Symbian shift, and John Forsyth, Symbian's vice president of strategy, said he expected the company to get its Eclipse patent license, designed for developers of open-source software, by 2010.
