Manufacturing sector skews number of jobless claims

Initial claims for unemployment benefits rose 30,000 last week, roughly in line with analysts' expectations. The Labor Department said the automobile industry and other industries within the manufacturing sector shed more jobs than anticipated after having fewer layoffs in the past two weeks. Economists said the drop in claims earlier this month might signal that the economic downturn is slowing. They also said seasonal adjustments make identifying an underlying trend difficult.
