With general inputs, software does the hard work of mechanizing characters

New software from Disney Research, ETH Zürich and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology can make the creation of mechanized characters easier, according to this article. Designers can load a character model with defined movement patterns into software and then allow the software to do all the work of defining the mechanical actuation points on the character's joints. Another set of tools also allows the creation of figures, such as jellyfish, that work by deformation.
