A new device allows scientists studying gene functions to activate or deactivate gene expression at will, writes John Ericson. The optogenetic technology from MIT and the Broad Institute "perturbs individual gene expression by shining a light on the cell," taking advantage of light-sensitive proteins to manipulate the cell's RNA instructions, Ericson explains.
