Senate report advises dropping dental chain from Medicaid

A Senate report recommends dropping Small Smiles' dental clinics from the Medicaid program after an investigation turned up evidence that business managers, not dentists, control the clinics, leading to profit-based decisions and unnecessary care. HHS Inspector General Daniel Levinson said the company is under new ownership and his organization is working with the new owner to address the concerns raised in the report. The company says it has changed dentists' pay structure and rebutted charges that dentists do not play a management role in clinics.
