Analysis: Marriott's smoke-free policy will have ripple effect

Marriott's announcement last week that all of its U.S. and Canadian properties are going smoke free is part of a growing trend within the industry, but it also could have a greater industry-wide impact than some other hotels' moves in this direction, given the sheer size and reach of Marriott. "This is the first time [motels] in the mid level and economy level have gone completely non-smoking," noted Joe McInerney, president and chief executive officer of the American Hotel & Lodging Association.
