Efforts made to salvage more from New Orleans homes

Efforts are under way in New Orleans to take a much more careful approach to dismantling homes destroyed in Hurricane Katrina in order to salvage as much original material as possible for reuse. In a pilot project, Portland, Ore.-based Mercy Corps is testing the deconstruction of homes as an alternative to demolition, and local contractors are being taught how to take the approach instead of simply relying on the wrecking ball.
