Lawmaker introduces bill to compensate tomato industry

Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-Fla., on Wednesday introduced legislation that would provide $100 million to compensate tomato growers and shippers for losses tied to the recent salmonella outbreak. Consumer advocates oppose the bill, saying taxpayers should not shoulder such costs and that the food industry should do more to prevent outbreaks. The industry, however, has yet to agree on who should benefit from the measure.
