The Seli, or cutter head, of the boring machine that's been at work on New York's subway tunnels cost between $6 million and $8 million, weighs 200 tons and is 22.5 feet in diameter. It will likely remain underground -- entombed in concrete -- when the work is finished. The contractor of the project said that abandoning the Seli may be more efficient and cost-effective than hauling it out.
