Experts call for nurses to pursue palliative care specialty

More palliative care specialists are needed, and nurses are excellent candidates because palliative care principles are "integral to the scope and standards of ... all specialty areas of nursing practice," says Marlene McHugh, who helped establish an acute palliative care unit at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium offers palliative care courses, and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association provides certification. "We need to see more advanced practice nurses in palliative care," said Dr. Sean O'Mahony, palliative medicine section director at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
