Legislative effort to disrupt NSA spying narrowly defeated in the House

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted by a slim margin to kill a proposed amendment to a Pentagon spending bill that would have halted indiscriminate data collection by the National Security Agency by denying it the funds to carry out the work. The amendment -- which gained the support of liberal Democrats and libertarians in the Republican Party -- was defeated by a vote of 205-217 thanks to opposition from many establishment lawmakers.
