Vilsack: Food stamp cuts would hurt retailers, growers

The Agriculture Department's two-year Healthy Incentives Pilot program has shown that an investment of 15 cents per person per day can boost their fresh fruit and vegetable consumption as much as 25%, said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack during a news conference Wednesday. Vilsack argued against arbitrary cuts in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, saying the moves not only hurt the health of low-income consumers but they also harm the livelihoods of retailers and farmers.
