Prices of concrete, other materials surge amid building boom in Iowa city

There are three multimillion-dollar projects slated for completion in Iowa City, Iowa, in 2016, and finishing those projects will require approximately over 230,000 concrete blocks, roughly 100,000 cubic yards of placed concrete and more than 12,000 tons of structural steel. The demand for building materials has reached a point where "regionally it has put a tremendous strain on the amount of materials that are needed for this project," said Joe Troness, Mortenson Construction's project manager for the Hancher Auditorium project.
