Medicare coverage of obesity treatment won't include potentially effective drugs

While the news last month that obesity has been elevated to the status of an illness that can be treated under Medicare was groundbreaking, some of the most effective treatments may not be covered under Medicare. The decision opens the door for Medicare possibly paying for such measures as bariatric surgery, but a potentially important class of treatments -- weight loss drugs -- won't be covered.
