PBMs draw scrutiny as Medicare law nears

Pharmaceutical benefit managers are expected to administer the Medicare prescription benefit that begins in 2006, and there is concern among consumer advocates that cost-cutting measures will come at the expense of patient care. PBMs say they provide a valuable service and regulating them would mitigate billions in savings, and an executive at the American Pharmacists Association says putting PBMs in the Medicare spotlight will require them to be more transparent.
