Doctors hope that skin from living donors, many of whom have had excess skin removed in weight-loss procedures, will aid the shortage of skin for complex large-graft operations. Only about 70 doctors perform live skin grafts, and the procedure is still under development, while surgeons continue to refine their techniques and the use of surgical tools to work with the harvested skin, which doesn't require blood-type matching or anti-rejection drugs.
